(Insert really big Fan-girl squeal)
Some of my fondest memories when I was a kid, was some of my favorite video games, and being able to play them.
At the risk of getting another poor birthday gift, because the parent’s were having a hard time figuring out what to get me, I asked for some money so I could buy something for myself. I’d know when I found it, what I wanted to get.
I ended up down at the local mall, in the Zeller’s store, staring at the video game collection they had there.
It was then when I saw it… Top shelf, inside the black cupboard, glass window locked over it, and lights from the inside of the case shining down on this huge box. On the box, it had a golden like person standing, with it’s arms on it’s hips, with a reflective black visor. Within that visor, I saw a child with a baseball cap. The child was looking up at the Golden creature, much like I was looking up at this box inside the case. I knew I had to have this.
It was a Super Nintendo game, but it was in a box much bigger than I’d normally seen them come in, so I was intruiged by it all. And for $99 (Thank gosh I had enough), it was MINE!
I rushed hope, opened the box, and was surprised that it came with a Strategy guide for how to play it. At the time, Internet wasn’t in my vocabulary, let alone GameFAQS.
So this book was really something. Green in color, with more characters in the same style, and the whole thing was presented like a Travel Agency flyer. Very clever!
So I grabbed the cart, and slammed it home into the family SNES, and thus began one of my first RPG Marathon’s (Next year was followed by FF3, in which I rented it so much, my mom went and bought it from there so I could keep my save game. XD;).
The name EARTHBOUND glowed on my screen, and this really cool music began to play, and I knew this was a very good purchase. Man, I spent so many hours, playing from front to back of the book.
I enjoyed the game so much, that every year, on my birthday, since then I try to sit down and give it a good round again, old-school style, by breaking out my SNES. XD;
Needless to say, when rumors flew of a sequel to it, I wanted it. I had begun to learn about the internet, as it’s infant days were born from BBS’ing, and I learned about ‘Earthbound 0′, or Mother 1. I learned the name changes, and I heard of a potential Mother 3. It was suggested it would have been for the Ultra64 (N64), then announced it would be on the Disk Drive addon for that console. Then it was shoved around for years, another suggestion it would have been on the Gamecube, and then it vanished! Just out of nowhere, nothing else. o.O
Mother 3 seemed like a thing of the past, until it’s release in Japan (ONLY Tch), on the Gameboy Advance. I was so excited. But I soon realized, it wasn’t going to be released in English, much to a huge fanbase’s dismay.
Luckily enough, however, one ultra Earthbound Fan (With some help from his friends), hacked the game, and translated it. Creating a patch for all english lovers to play!
This was a couple days ago, and, of course, I decided I wanted to play it. So I sat down last night and had a mini marathon before I had to goto bed. And I must say, I am really enjoying it so far. o.O But, the storyline is VERY DARK.
Holycrap, it’s not something very young children should play, that’s for sure. o.O;
I’m gonna leave it at that, but I suggest you guys play any of the Earthbound/Mother series games! It’s quirky fun, and really an experience you need to see!
